Farm Safety Days
 
May 12 & 13, 2011  - Jefferson County Fairgrounds
 
The Jefferson Conservation District participated in Farm Safety Days sponsored by Penn State Cooperative Extension.  Second grade students from Jefferson County School Districts were bussed to the fairgrounds and rotated to 17 different stations related to safety.  Jim Berry and Missy Buck manned the Ag Awareness Station.  Students learned what Agriculture is and how important soil is to Agriculture.  The Animal Safety Station was provide to all students at lunch time.  Jim and Missy, along with the students from the Ag Class at Brockway High School, also taught the students about safe ways of handling animals.  Children were able to see various animals including a horse, calf, lamb, goat, rabbits and a pig.

Tyler Smith, of the Ag Class at Brockway School, brought a 3 week old calf from his family farm.
These girls got their fingers dirty in the sand, silt and clay.
Students were excited to learn that chocolate milk does NOT come from a brown cow!

The Ag Class from Brockway High School brought a variety of animals and taught students the safe way to handle them.
Field corn is an agricultural crop used as food for some animals.
