The Sugar Camp Run Project involving an Air Shaft Deep Mine Discharge near Sykesville, Jefferson County has been an on-going
project for the Jefferson Conservation District since 1996.
In past years, water sampling and an assessment was done
which proposed accessing the water in the mine, treating it and discharging it back into Sugar Camp Run or Stump Creek. In January
of 2009, the District received a CEI Grant to continue their efforts. In August and September of 2009, as part of this project,
two wells were drilled to access the mine pools. The water from these wells is currently being monitored. This water will
provide the Borough of Sykesville with water for fire protection. Future plans of treating the water may provide additional
uses.
A "Mud Puppy" was used as part of the drilling process.
Sugar Camp Run runs into Stump Creek obviously degrading it.
Two wells were drilled by Leighton Drilling.
The drilling is closely monitored at all times.
The mine pool is almost completely dried up.
Soon after drilling the wells, the mine pool is considerably lower.
Weirs were installed at the mine pool in 2005.
The mine pool was a hazard for the area surrounding it including a elementary school.
This has been a community effort. Thank you!
